Sitka Energy Project

A dozen high-school aged youth gathered in Sitka for the second Energy
Career Camp - Intro to Welding, on August 20-24, 2007.
The camp was part
of the Sitka Energy Project, which was funded by a grant awarded under
the President's High Growth Job Training Initiative, as implemented by
the U.S. Department of Labor's Employment and Training Administration
and the State of Alaska, Department of Labor and Workforce Development.
Local support was provided by Allen Marine, Harris Aircraft Services,
several Haines businesses, and the parents of most of the campers. |

The Sitka Energy Project had a goal of increasing awareness among Sitka’s high school students, parents, teachers and the public of the exciting careers in the energy industry. The project was funded through a State of Alaska High Growth Job Training Initiative grant. The energy field will soon be booming in the state of Alaska with jobs available in construction, mining, transportation, and the oil and gas industry - jobs that will be in demand for today’s students and will command high salaries.
As part of this project, the Alaska Energy Careers website has been launched as a steppingstone for Sitka’s high school students, featuring local high school graduates who are now successfully working in energy careers, and encouraging today’s students to explore the possibilities. Ongoing support for the site is provided by BP,
providing energy and jobs for Alaskans.

Sitka Works and Sheldon Jackson College (SJC) collaborated to present the first ever Energy Career Camp - August 20-26, 2006! It was held on the SJC campus.

Fourteen campers learned about:
- Great jobs in the energy industry
- Sweet salaries like $40,000 +
- GIS (Geographic Information System) software
Campers earned:
- 3 college credits, and
- A place in Alaska’s Future
