Sitka Works Project


The Goal of the Sitka Works Project is to help those who are unemployed or underemployed to find good jobs. The services offered complement and supplement the services provided through the Sitka Job Center, part of the Alaska Job Center Network.

How the Sitka Works Project can help you:

  • Job Search Assistance -Training and coaching on employment applications, resumes, cover letters, interviewing skills, and registering with the Sitka Job Center.
  • Basic Skills Instruction -Tutoring to improve reading and math skills to make you more employable or help you earn your GED. We can also refer you to the Learning Center at UAS for tutoring and GED testing.
  • Occupational Training - Short-term courses to be completed (and paid for) during the project, or referrals to more lengthy employment-related education or training.
  • Emergency Support Services - Assistance with (and payment for) interview/work clothing, transportation, daycare, medical/dental care, and other needs that will help you get to work.
  • MASST (Mature Alaskans Seeking Skills Training - Sitka Works is the local liaison for MASST, a program of SERRC (Southeast Regional Resource Center) in Juneau. MASST offers subsidized employment and training for eligible seniors ages 55 and older. MASST clients are co-enrolled in the Sitka Works Project.

This project ended December 2007. We hope to get more funding later to
help provide training and support for adults seeking employment.


The Specific Objectives are to help you:

  • Enter a new job
  • Advance from part-time to full-time employment
  • Retain a job where you need new skills
  • Stay employed for at least six months at the same job
  • Increase wage levels by 20% or more
  • Receive occupational training that leads to a job
  • Receive credentials that lead to a job
  • Enter advanced educational or training programs

Eligible applicants for the program will be:

  • Residents of Sitka or one of the surrounding communities, AND
  • 16 years of age or older and out of school, AND
  • Unemployed OR
  • Underemployed (working less than 30 hours/week and/or for $10/hour or less) AND
  • In need of assistance in accessing and/or utilizing the services of the Sitka Job Center to find sustainable employment.

The Sitka Works Project has been funded for a third year, through December 2007, through a $65,000 grant from the US Department of Labor (USDOL), Employment and Training Administration (ETA), Center for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives (CFBCI) for grassroots organizations.
